Carta De Vida
Dry point print and gouache watercolor paper 18cm x 13cm October 2019 Carta de Vida tells a story of a girl who’s beautiful on the outside, but is cold on the inside, she shows no emotion and has a hard time caring for others. I can relate to this on a personal level. I expressed this feeling through my drypoint, where I used a skull as a representation of death, to show how she is on the inside, my zodiac sign, and flowers around the skull, as a mark of beauty, and to show how she is on the outside.

Inspiration:
My inspiration comes from El Dia De Los Muertos, Frida Kahlo's personality and beauty specifically. The piece based my dry-point off of was, "The Frame" by Frida Kahlo. I already had the idea that I wanted to do something with a skull because El dia de Los Muertos was approaching. When doing my research, I was exposed to three different types of paintings and drawings that helped me formed the idea of doing a skull with decorations and flowers to represent El dia de Los Muertos. The reason I decided to choose Frida as my artist was because of her beauty, religion belief and personality. Throughout her lifetime, she is described as a “tall strong beautiful woman” by her ex-husband Diego. This is because Frida never feared any other female and her only goal was to get through life, she put her emotions aside, and her goals first. |

Planning sketches
This was my first sketch, I wanted to practice getting the skull shape right, and what I was going to do the face. I kinda liked the idea of having a human eye, as a mark of beauty and a skull eye with a flower to show the idea of beauty outside and death inside. As the flower is outside the dark bolded eye. This is my second eye, I didn’t like the way the head was shaped, so I gave it another try and redrew the head. This time I added more detail, I added decorations as a form of celebration. I gave the skull thick eyebrows to familiarize it with Frida's facial features, and I still kept the human eye. In my third sketch, I did both eyes the same, and kept the idea, of having bold dark eyes, and flowers inside, to show the idea of beauty outside and death inside. I added decorations, and personalize symbols to represent the story I am demonstrating in my dry point. This sketch was the closest to what I wanted to proceed with because it showed the beauty and connected to my theme of religion and nature, by using death and flowers as a form of decoration as well as choosing a religious artist. |
