The artwork that I used as inspiration was “The Son of Man”, 1946. This is considered to be my negative pieces where Mohamed is stuck in a dark moment of his life, wondering what identity he will take on next. He spends most of his time looking in a mirror wondering who he will be today. In this piece Mohammad finally, begins to see himself as who he truly is. Inspiration
This is another of the works by Rene Magritte that had inspired me to do my drawing off of. after knowing that the book focused on self identity, I thought of Rene Magritte and how a variety of his work is a collection of abstract art where the characters have an object that hides their face, no identity. Therefor this is why I decided to choose Rene Magritte, for my artwork. The way Rene art is involve is my piece is , I decide to recreate the background of "The son of man". While investigating this artwork, Iv'e came upon that for "The sons man" extreme style is close to some of Van Gogh's paintings. I also learned that ,The Son of Man is a self portrait., The Son of Man is part of a series. and Some CRITICS believe The Son of Man is a religious painting because, the title Son of Man refers to Jesus, Magritte's painting as a surrealist depiction of Jesus's transfiguration.
“The Son of Man”, 1946.
I did my drawing based off a novel I read for my English class. The novel is called The Sand Child" by Tahar Ben Jelloun, it is based off a Muslim girl that lived in Morocco and was forced to give up her in integrity by allowing her self to be raised as a boy to get special male privileges . As she goes through puberty she starts to develop certain feelings and starts to question her identity. She began to go insane because she has this secret that's eating her alive, and hates seeing herself because it reminded her of her fake identity. I did my positive drawing based on Mohammed which is the character of the book revealing her true identity as a girl rather than a boy. I did my negative as Mohamed faces without any identity, not knowing who he is. This novel reminded me of an artwork I've seen called La Reproduction by Rene Magritte.
I chose this book because it related to my main themes religion and beauty.

This is the artwork that inspired me to create "Ill be me today". When doing further research on the artwork Iv'e learned that "It is considered a portrait of James although James's face is not depicted The work depicts a man standing in front of a mirror . This art piece currently sits in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Rene Magritte is a Belgian surrealist artists that was born just short of the 20th century in 1898. His paintings are mysterious ."It is perhaps frustrating then to see, that there is no reflection, instead, the mirror shows the back of the mans head again which leaves the viewer puzzled as to why the mans face is not shown, hence creating some intrigue, questions and discussion around the piece". This artwork developed the idea of me doing something similar to illustrate the idea of someone becoming ones true self. I did this by creating a drawing of a girl looking at her self, with a disguises and and a boy looking at himself without a face and a dress.

Planning Sketches

Process
Who am I?
1). I used a paper that was 15 by 10 inches 2). I lightly tried to re create one of my sketches, 3). I used a ruler to create any type of lines 4) For who am I, I drew the heads first, then I drew the background. 5). The background included bricks, a ocean, and clouds 6). For the bricks I ranged from the colors green, blue, and orange and each had a different type of pattern. 7). For the sky I used shading of light blue, to blue to create an effect. 8). I drew the clouds by, lightly created an outline and shading them in, starting at dark to light. 5). Once I had my drawing done, I began to add in more color and added more shading to my drawing. |

Today Ill be Me?
1). I used a paper that was 15 by 10 inches 2). I lightly tried to re create one of my sketches, 3). I used a ruler to create any type of lines 4). Lines that I used for "Today Ill be me " are straight lines. I created straight lines along the edge of the left side, each line was spaced out half and inch. The line were traced in brown but colored in yellow. Just like "La Reproduction" by Rene Magritte 5). I then moved on to create the mirror, I drew a oval closer to the right side, but not to close to the edge. 6). Before drawing the reflection, I drew the person looking in the mirror as a man 7). I tried to highlight the wrinkles in his shirt and his muscles by using drawing darker lines. 8) I drew the reflection as a girl, this is suppose to represent Mohammed seeing himself for who he really is, a girl. 9). I drew a horizontal line across my paper starting from where the bottom of the mirror ended. 10). I went about 5 inches down and drew another horizon line across, forming a rectangle. 11).Then i went two inches down and did another horizontal line, I colored it in solid brown. 12) This created a table, I added a pattern of swirls to the bottom of the table. 13). Finally. On top of the table, I drew a book, and titled in " The sand child" |

Experimentation
- The only experimentation that i did involve what I was going to do to the face.
- The other experimentation that took place was the patterns that I was going to give each brick.
- My last experimentation was the shading of the oval picture, I need to find out how much force i needed to put into the color pencil.
Compare and Contrast
I was able to use the idea of a man looking at himself and
not being able to see the reflection of his face as a way to, show my idea that when Mohammed looks at himself he doesn't see himself, but as someone else. This piece is my positive, because it shows, Mohammed being able to recognize himself as a woman, and coming out, that why the reflection pops out more. The book next to Rene is also present in my drawing.

This drawing is considered my negative where, Mohamed is still wondering and deciding who he wants to me. He was no identity, yet. The floating heads represents his thoughts, and is they go up it gets darker which are his lies and secrets that hes been keeping. There is money in his eyes because in the eyes of is parents, they only had him to pass down the family business and a apple, not only as a similarity for Rene piece but as symbol of him having to keep his mouth shut and follow his parents desires.
Reflection:
In overall I am not a good drawer, drawing this was a very difficult, but what I found most difficult was the shading. I began to think that I was just coloring it in and my drawings where looking like a coloring book. That is when I talked to Chad, and he told me my hands were out of proposition, and asked me why mu legs stopped half way, and why the brick cut half of Mohammed head in who am i? After my interview with Katie, she told me the exact thing and explained how to fix it. This project was very overwhelming because, i forgot my paper and my dad had to cut some paper to the correct measurements, and It was frustrating. Although, I am proud, of the product, and will recreate this using Gauge paint.

Act Questions:
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
Rene Magritte work both La Reproduction and The son of man are portraits. While both portraits have no face, i decided to use as inspiration as a representation of no identity which is the theme of the book. Connecting to my theme, of religion while its a Muslim girl, and beauty, as being able to love herself.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Rene Magritte was trying to convey a sense of mystery and provoking images. This is seen in the way in which both of La Reproduction and The son of man have ordinary objects in an usual context.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I have learned that even artist from 2000's are still creating amazing art and still inspired by ancient artist like Van Gogh.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my piece is self identity, religion and beauty. While a Muslim girls struggles to identify herself as a girl pr boy and love her self for who she truly is.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
While researching I inferred that Rene Magritte had trouble with identity, in a variety of pieces he paints the person with something over the head. Is is a way of saying, they aren't who they truly are? and placing the object over their face as a representation of who they are.
