“Who am I” is a continuation of “Today Ill be me” it is also inspired by the book, “The Sand Child” by Tahar Jelloun and the same artist Rene Magritee expect a different artwork was used as inspiration. The artwork that I used as inspiration was “The Son of Man”, 1946. This is considered to be my negative pieces where Mohamed is stuck in a dark moment of his life, wondering what identity he will take on next. This artwork focus on self identity and includes my main themes, religion, and beauty.

This artwork is inspired by a book “The Sand Child” In the book she is raised as a boy. As the character Mohammed grows up he faces problems, with true identity and has trouble loving herself. He spends most of his time looking in a mirror wondering who he will be today. In this piece Mohammad finally, begins to see himself as who he truly is. The artwork I used as inspiration to tell this story is La Reproduction by Rene Magritte. My artwork focuses on beauty and religion theme related aspects.

This is another of the works by Rene Magritte that had inspired me to do my drawing off of. After knowing that the book focused on self identity, I thought of Rene Magritte and how a variety of his work is a collection of abstract art where the characters have an object that hides their face, and have no identity. Therefor this is why I decided to choose Rene Magritte, for my artwork. The way Rene art is involve in my piece is , I decide to recreate the background of "The son of man". While investigating this artwork, Iv'e came upon that for "The sons man" extreme style is close to some of Van Gogh's paintings. I also learned that "The Son of Man is a self portrait., The Son of Man is part of a series. and Some CRITICS believe The Son of Man is a religious painting because, the title Son of Man refers to Jesus, Magritte's painting as a surrealist depiction of Jesus's transfiguration".
I did my drawings based off a novel I read for my English class. The novel is called The Sand Child" by Tahar Ben Jelloun, it is based off a Muslim girl that lived in Morocco and was forced to give up her in integrity by allowing her self to be raised as a boy to get special male privileges . As she goes through puberty she starts to develop certain feelings and starts to question her identity. She began to go insane because she has this secret that's eating her alive, and hates seeing herself because it reminded her of her fake identity. I did my positive drawing based on Mohammed which is the character of the book revealing her true identity as a girl rather than a boy. I did my negative as Mohamed faces without any identity, not knowing who he is. This novel reminded me of an artwork I've seen called La Reproduction by Rene Magritte. I chose this book because it related to my main themes religion and beauty. This is the artwork that inspired me to create "Ill be me today". When doing further research on the artwork Iv'e learned that "It is considered a portrait of James although James's face is not depicted The work depicts a man standing in front of a mirror . This art piece currently sits in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Rene Magritte is a Belgian surrealist artists that was born just short of the 20th century in 1898. His paintings are mysterious ."It is perhaps frustrating then to see, that there is no reflection, instead, the mirror shows the back of the mans head again which leaves the viewer puzzled as to why the mans face is not shown, hence creating some intrigue, questions and discussion around the piece". This artwork developed the idea of me doing something similar to illustrate the idea of someone becoming ones true self. I did this by creating a drawing of a girl looking at her self, in the form of a muscular man. |
- Both these pieces are inspired by the book the Sand Child. In "Who am I" I am showing Mohammed who is the character of the book rising to the top starting at the bottom which is the brick wall which represents an obstacle which he is overcoming. I decided to do 2 heads to show the two identities that he plays in the book. I choose to do an artwork based on the book because the character is Muslim which connects to my religious theme and in the positive piece, he learns to love himself which connects to my second theme beauty. In "Today Il be me"I am trying to show Mohamed looking at himself, but he is seeing himself for who he truly is. Although there is a red x covering his mouth because even though he finally accepts himself he doesn't reveal himself in the book, because of the decision he's made. Therefore he just takes another identity. The idea of identity made me choose Rene Magritte as an inspiration.
